St Nicholas Hospice

St Nicholas Hospice Care is a registered charity, founded in 1984 to provide specialist care and comfort to people with life shortening illnesses, and to support their families, friends and carers. We aim to enable patients in our care to live as fully as possible, with dignity and free from unnecessary pain and fear.

Our services are available free of charge, and include the following:

Sylvan Ward – an in-patient unit, providing 24-hour specialised nursing care tailored to each patient’s needs
Orchard Centre – day therapy services, including physiotherapy,
rehabilitation, complementary therapy and vital peer support
Community Hospice Team – providing palliative care and practical support for patients within their
own home (and elsewhere in the community), and supporting their carers
Bereavement Support for families, including a bespoke programme for children and young people
Emotional and Spiritual Support for patients and their families, including children
Hospice Neighbours – training local volunteers to provide practical support within
patients’ homes, such as gardening, cooking, shopping or companionship.

We directly support and care for approximately 2,500 people each year throughout West Suffolk
and South Norfolk, across all of our care services. We have about 320 people in our care at any one time.

We also run a programme of specialist learning opportunities about palliative care for healthcare professionals and organisations, training and educating around 1,250 people per year. Our aim is to manage pain, symptoms and medication to enable patients to return home where possible. We believe that patients should be cared for in
accordance with their wishes, participating in all decisions relating to their care and comfort.

Our services are delivered by a professional multidisciplinary team of: Doctors, Registered Nurses,
Nursing Assistants, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Complementary Therapists,
Chaplains, Specialist Psychological Therapists, Social Workers and volunteers.
